On "Judging Amy," Amy Brenneman
dons judicial robes in Har t ford, Ct.,
just like her real-life mom.
But this time there was a triumph
of the spirit in a spirited talk she had
with her father while visiting home.
"My father sat down on the edge of
the bed one morning and said, 'I'm
going to say this once. If I had to do it
over again, I would never have a 9-to-
5 j
Case closed. "It was such an impor-
tant moment," recalls Brenneman of
feeling the victory of validation from
her father, the lawyer.
Not that she hasn't gotten a
thumbs-up verdict from her mother,
whom she calls a "trailblazer."
"My own mother was in the first
class of women at Harvard Law School,
the second woman on the bench in
Connecticut," she says, impressed her-
self. "Well, I'm the daughter of that
and I'm just as strong."
And don't imply there are weak
links to their loving relationship: "It's
a real equal relationship. The glue is
that we love each other more than
probably we love anybody else."
If Brenneman loves a challenge,
she's got one. She also serves as execu-
tive producer of judging Amy, a show
that has become this season's highest-
rated new drama.
Brenneman is pleasantly surprised
that Judging Amy has been beating the
much-hyped Once and Again on ABC
in the ratings. "We thought [it] was
going to kick our butt," she has said.
What will happen when IVYPD
Blue, on which she played a drug-
addled cop, takes over the 10 p.m:
Tuesday time slot on ABC later this
month? Does Brenneman feel like a
perp slammed against a wall with no
place to go?
Oh, her show will go places, smiles
Brenneman. "Bring it on," she says
happily of the Blues battle. 111
Judging Amy airs 10 p.m.
Tuesdays on CBS.
