MISSION

from page 30

Angela Hospice, Beaumont Hospice
or any other of the hospices serving
Jews in southeastern Michigan.
When trying to connect a family
with Rabbi Freedman, I am often con
fronted with, "My father's not reli-
gious," or, "My mom hasn't been in a
synagogue for years." Whether it's for
reading a prayer, holding a hand or
giving a hug, visions of my father
invade my mind as I realize what a
treasure we all have in Rabbi Freed-
man — just a phone call away.
Through the vision of Rabbi Freed
man and Federation Chief Executive
Officer Robert Aronson, and the gen-
erosity of West Bloomfield's Milton
and Lois Shiffman, Partnership 2000
has engaged our Israeli partners to
take our success and establish a hos-
pice in the central Galilee.
On a recent trip there — the cen-
tral Galilee is Detroit's designated
Partnership 2000 region — I was
struck by the secularism of the collec-
tive group with which we spoke. Doc-
tors, nurses, administrators and
patients constantly echoed the refrain:
"I am not religious;" "I have no rabbi
in my life;" "I don't belong to a syna-
gogue or temple."
I saw in Israel the same need that I
saw in the early development of hospice
in the early '80s. As we made home vis-
its to terminally ill patients, I envisioned
for our Milton and Lois ShifFman Hos-
pice of the Valleys the same gift that we
are blessed with here: the gift that no
one need be alone or abandoned by
faith in their final days or hours.
My hope is that as we use our tech-
nology to bring us together, the
human touch, faith and compassion
that have been our gifts through the
work of Rabbi Freedman will be
received in the same way as we go for--;
ward with our mission in Israel.
We not only will have made a won-
derful impact on our Partnership 2000
region by bringing that sense of peace to
the dying and their families, but also
truly made the world a better place.
To Milton and Lois Shiffman, on
behalf of all of us who were privileged
to have participated in this mission,
we will forever be grateful for your
generosity of spirit.
