Morocco Invites
Israeli Minister

Jerusalem (JTA) — Morocco's King
Mohammed invited Israeli Foreign
Minister David Levy to visit him next
month at the end of the Muslim holy
month of Ramadan, Israel's Foreign
Ministry said.
_ Morocco and Israel established low-
level diplomatic ties a year after the first
Oslo accord was signed in September
1993. But Morocco has refused to
upgrade relations with the Jewish state
pending progress in its peace talks with
Syria and Lebanon.

Mosque Dispute
Under Discussion

Jerusalem (JTA) — The Israeli govern-
ment, Christian churches and the
Islamic Movement are reportedly dis-
cussing another compromise in a dis-
pute over a planned Nazareth mosque.
Latin Patriarch Michel Sabah said the
sides are talking about building a cultur-
al center for the three religions on a dis-
puted plot of land near the Basilica of
the Annunciation. Sabah said the
mosque would be built somewhere else.
Sabah has also said Pope John Paul II
will not be accompanied by Israeli offi-
cials when he visits eastern Jerusalem
during a scheduled pilgrimage in March.

Golan Families
Want Compensation

Jerusalem (JTA) — Some 100 Golan
Heights residents may sue for compen-
sation if Israel withdraws from the area.
The Israeli daily Ha'aretz reported
that a group of families from the Golan
town of Katzrin asked an attorney to
represent them. A similar lawsuit was
prepared when former Prime Minister
Yitzhak Rabin was negotiating with
Syria.

Israeli Court Rules
On Extradition

Jerusalem (JTA) — A Jerusalem court
will decide whether an Israeli soldier can
be extradited to Canada, where he is
wanted for murder.
Daniel Weiz, 19, denies he participat-
ed in an assault on Dimitri Baranovski
in a Toronto park in November. The
Knesset this year, after the controversial
Samuel Sheinbein case, changed legisla-
tion that previously barred the extradi-

tion of Israeli citizens to stand trial for a
crime committed abroad.
Sheinbein, an American teenager
wanted for killing a man in Maryland,
escaped to Israel and claimed citizenship,
His father was an Israeli. Under the old
law, extradition was refused and he was
tried in Israel for the crime and sen-
tenced to 24 years in prison.

Arafat Vows
Statehood Declaration

Jerusalem (JTA) — Palestinian Authority
President Yassir Arafat said he is unhap-
py with the progress of talks with Israel
and will declare an independent state
next year, possibly before the September
deadline for reaching a final peace agree-
ment.
"I very much regret to say that the
negotiations are not going well at all
from our viewpoint," Arafat said in an
interview published in the Spanish daily
El Mundo.

Military School
Accepts Women

Jerusalem (JTA) — The Haifa military
academy broke a 50-year tradition and
agreed to allow women to apply for
admission.
The institution's all-male policy was
challenged by Lee Wertheim, 17, who
appealed to advocacy groups and politi-
cal figures, including Deputy Defense
Minister Ephraim Sneh.
Wertheim told Israel Radio she con-
siders attending the military academy
the start of an army career she hopes
would include the Israel Air Force pilot's
course, which also recently opened its
doors to women.

Hillary Clinton
Addresses Rabbis

:MN ■ tN

"4.0.

New York (JTA) — First Lady Hillary
Rodham Clinton "made it very clear" to
members of the North American Boards
of Rabbis that "she would have respond-
ed and would have rebuked" the wife of
the Palestinian Authority president had
she understood Suha Arafat's controver-
sial speech last month, according to
Rabbi Marc Schneier, president of the
umbrella organization for local rabbini-
cal boards.
The expected Democratic candidate
for an open Senate seat in New York
had been criticized for sitting silently as
Arafat accused Israel of poisoning
Palestinians.
