Talmudic Justice: Case Studies in
Tort Law from Tractate Bava Metzia

This section of the Talmud deals with matters of
liability and negligence. The class will review
primary texts in the original with English
translation, considering the contemporary
applications of this ancient wisdom.
(Bring your own dairy lunch.)

author of the most widely selling book on
Judaism of the past two decades, Jewish

Literacy: The Most Important Things to Know
About the Jewish Religion, Its People and Its
History, and many other important and

popular books on Judaism. In 1997, his
novel, An Eye for an Eye, became the basis for
four episodes of David Kelley's Emmy
Award-winning ABC TV series, The Practice,
and he has co-written three additional
episodes. He is currently writing an episode
of the TV series, Touched By An Angel. He
lectures throughout the United States, and
serves as an Associate of CLAL, the National
Jewish Center for Learning and Leadership,
and as the spiritual leader of the Synagogue
of the Performing Arts in Los Angeles. He is
currently completing The Book of Jewish

Values: A Day by Day Guide to Ethical Living,

due to be published in March 2000.

This course will examine the development of
messianic anticipations as recorded in Hebrew
Scripture and Rabbinic literature, discuss
several of Jewish history's false messiahs and
reflect upon Christian and Jewish messianic
expectations of the immediate future.
