Triple Mitzvah

For the first time in its history, Temple Beth El
last Shabbat hosted a b'not mitzvah involving
three family members — Charna Segal and
daughters Amanda and Jennifer. What made the
Jan. 1 service even more special was that it fea-
tured the congregation's newly scribed Torah. In
today's cover story (pages 54-56) by staff writer
Shelli Dorfman and contributing photographer
Glenn Triest, we share the Segals' simcha.
Also inside, we furnish an update on the
Israeli/Syrian peace talks in
Shepherdstown, W. Va., and explore
some of the key issues, including
water rights in the region and control
of the Golan Heights. Contributing Editor
Jonathan Friendly coordinated this coverage
(pages 18 22).
