When Ivanhoe was built, women weren't even allowed to come into a bar to look for their errant spouses, let alone to eat and drink. The rest of the building was divid- ed into five dinning rooms and a kitchen on the first floor ... Agnes and Stan lived upstairs. I never realized how much heat those old radiators gave off ... Don't know of any other Oriental restaurant that served you a Caesar salad, French onion soup with baked cheese, veal parmigiana, flambed steak Diane or flaming shrimp Saigon with cheese sauce ... among other set- afire tableside dishes. It even had whole poached lake trout in a creamed sauce of shrimp, crabmeat and white wine ... and appetizers like crab Macao (crab meat and cream cheese), barbecued ribs and others ... Even a lamb chop entree ... and an Oriental Greek salad. BACK IN 1959, Kingsley Inn on Woodward was the first place to have a recognized Sunday brunch ...
