Customers didn't expect anything
even resembling any lavishness at
Ivanhoe ... The old-time radiators
served a dual purpose ... to warm the
place and to keep your potatoes from
getting cold ... but you could be sure
of receiving white cloth napkins and
a white tablecloth.
Of special note at Ivanhoe was the
bar ... pretty much as it was when
built in the early 1900s ... When
Ivanhoe was built, women weren't
even allowed to come into a bar to
look for their errant spouses, let alone
to eat and drink.
The rest of the building was divid-
ed into five dinning rooms and a
kitchen on the first floor ... Agnes
and Stan lived upstairs.
I never realized how much heat
those old radiators gave off ... Sitting
near one was like being by a furnace
... and they really did keep the pota-
toes warm.

Zelda's spot on Southfield Road had
a dish it called Sacaccioni ... a special
pizza dough folded into a pocket and
stuffed with a choice of three ingredi-
ents ... But nobody ever did find out
what sacaccioni meant.
THE HAMBURGER served at
the Mikado, in the Hotel Plaza at
downtown Detroit's Renaissance
Center, was considered among the
best around ... The Japanese restau-
rant served it with mushrooms inside
and topped with teriyaki sauce and
water chestnuts.
A CASE COULD easily be made
about when an Oriental restaurant
was not exactly an Oriental restaurant
... The answer was when a place was
called Rikshaw Inn on Maple and
Orchard Lake Road.
Don't know of any other Oriental
restaurant that served you a Caesar
salad, French onion soup with baked
cheese, veal parmigiana, flambed
steak Diane or flaming shrimp Saigon
with cheese sauce ... among other set-
afire tableside dishes.
It even had whole poached lake
trout in a creamed sauce of shrimp,
crabmeat and white wine ... and
appetizers like crab Macao (crab meat
and cream cheese), barbecued ribs
and others ... Even a lamb chop
entree ... and an Oriental Greek
salad.
BACK IN 1959, Kingsley Inn on
Woodward was the first place to have
a recognized Sunday brunch ... When
people learned about it, their reaction
