Local Students Entertain Seniors

Students and staff of Workmen's
Circle/Arbeter Ring Sunday School,
plus parent chaperones, visited the
Teitel and Prentis Jewish Apartments
in Oak Park on Dec. 19, where resi-
dents were treated to a musical presen-
tation:
Under the direction of music
teacher Esther Freeman, the children
sang a medley of Yiddish and Hebrew
folksongs whose themes centered on
peace, peoplehood, friendship, learn-
ing and the upcoming holiday of Tu
b'Shevat. Residents were supplied with
song sheets so they could join in.
The students ended their program
with the song "David Melech Yisrael"
("David, King of Israel"), for which
they do a "hand-jive" routine that
begins slowly and speeds up with each
rendition.
Participating staff included Yiddish
teacher Annemarie Bonowitz; Katie
Moss, who teaches kindergarten and
first grade; school director Jan Adler,

who teaches second through seventh
grades; and Berkley High School
seniors David Rodgers, pianist, and
Sara Gold and Samantha Ashley, class-
room assistants and Workmen's Circle
shule graduates.

Students Giving For Tzedaka

Fifth-grade students in Detroit-area
Jewish congregational and day schools
will participate in a hands-on Tzedaka
Experience 9 a.m.-noon Sunday, Jan.
30, at Temple Beth El.
The Tzedaka Experience teaches
students about activities of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit-
supported agencies and other local
agencies that serve the Jewish commu-
nity.
In advance of the event, the schools
will teach a specially prepared Helping
Hands curriculum created by the
Agency for Jewish Education of
Metropolitan Detroit. The students
will also participate in the Penny

Harvest, collecting and recycling pen-
nies and other coins from families,
friends and neighbors to be dropped
off at the Tzedaka Experience and
allocated by the students to the agen-
cies.
Margie Dunn is chairing the event;
Cookie Gonik is the associate chair.
Penny Harvest chair is Roz Blanck.
Penny donations may be dropped
off at Jewish religious schools or at
Temple Beth El on the day of the
event, or given to fifth-grade students
that attend Jewish congregational and
day schools.
