Mosque Construction
Raises Dispute

Jerusalem (JTA) — Israel's foreign
minister is trying to appease Christian
leaders who are angry about a govern-
ment decision to allow construction of
a mosque on land in Nazareth.
David Levy assured church leaders
that the government is committed to
preserving Christian freedoms in
Israel. Christian and Muslim claims to
the land near the Basilica of the
Annunciation spurred tensions in the
town, and at one point threatened to
jeopardize a planned pilgrimage by
Pope John Paul II to Israel in March.

High Court Brief
Cites Jewish Law

rr

Washington (JTA) — Biblical and talmu-
dic texts on capital punishment are
being used to try to convince the U.S.
Supreme Court that electric-chair execu-
tions are cruel and unusual punishment.
A brief, believed to be the first that
exclusively cites Jewish law, was sub-
mitted on behalf of the National
Jewish Commission on Law and
Public Affairs and the International
Association of Jewish Lawyers and
Jurists. It supports the argument of an
inmate on Florida's death row.

training modern Orthodox rabbis,
Yeshivat Chovevei Torah will train
Jewish men to "shape the spiritual and
intellectual character of the Jewish com-
munity" in "modern, open, Orthodox
values and commitments," according to
the yeshiva's dean, Rabbi Avi Weiss.
