should have sent a representative of
equal rank or President Assad should
have appeared.
Long the most intransigent oppo-
nent of a Jewish homeland, Syria
despises Israel's existence. Yet with a
promise, Syria can once more take the
Golan Heights off Jewish hands. In
turn, Israel must pay Syria for water
supplies and Syria can strangle at will
its mortal enemy. Security arrange-
ments may be guaranteed, peace
treaties may be signed, yet peace is
even further away since this arrange-
ment would not rescue the all-impor-
tant Syrian national dignity and pride.
That requires Israel's destruction.
That peace must happen "because
war no longer makes sense to either
side" is nonsense. War in the Middle
East does make sense because the
Arabs see and believe it is a just way to
regain their land.
On the contrary, peace now exists
on the Golan because it is still official-
ly part of Israel; Israeli troops face
Arab soldiers in force, and Jewish set-
tlers farm and make the land Jewish.
