LETTERS • Are you battling with your child over food? • Is your child sneaking food? in a vital, alive community. There are only about 1,400 Jews in Cuba now. Some take two hours to get to services and then return home. One man cannot afford the 2-3 pesos for bus fare; he walked two hours to get there. We saw a community in need of some basic items, as are other Cubans. The community leadership is working hard to nurture our people, provide for communal needs and maintain Judaism in Cuba. There were small children, teens, young adults and old people. The American Jewish Joint Distribution Committee is doing a good job helping these people help themselves, helping them to grow and bloom as a community. The production at Shaarey Zedek was a smashing success. The director, Helen Butleroff, a dynamo of a human being, pulled off nothing short of a mir- acle. Having directed Yiddle on Broad- way and in Los Angeles this was the first time she had to do it with amateurs, not professionals. But the results were phe- nomenal. Kudos should also go to Cantor Chaim Najman of Shaarey Zedek; he initiated and locally produced Yiddle, attended all the rehearsals and offered tips to the singers. Richard Jacobs (Reb Gold), Udi Kapen (Froym) and Lorrie Weis- berg (Teibele) after the per- formance of "Yiddle" at Congregation Shaarey Zedek. He was chosen to play the role of Froym in a stage adaptation of the old movie, which would be presented by Congregation Shaarey Zedek ("Not Just Fiddlin' Around," Nov. 26). Udi, a pediatrician and sometime actor/singer/dancer, wanted to get acquainted with the original film and especially with his counterpart Froym.
