about 400 yards of us," said Regev.
Yet Israel also pushed the border —
even better than the Syrians did. Each
side took control of land in the demil-
itarized zone during those years, but
Israel took more, said Gelber.
Sokok recalled that Israeli Army
officers would inform Gadot before-
hand "that at such-and-such hour on
such-and-such day, there was going to
be fighting, so we should be prepared.
They knew that if Israeli tractors drove
onto Arab land, the Syrians would
shoot, and that's what happened."
Surprisingly, all but one of the kib-
butzniks interviewed said their views
on the negotiations with Syria were
not influenced by their past experi-
ences living in the shadow of a Syrian-
ruled Golan Heights, but rather were
based on political considerations alone.
"We have to keep the . Golan
because it is no different from Judea
and Samaria, Safed or Tel Aviv —
they're all part of the Zionist settle-
ment enterprise," said Sat.
Yitzhak Chen opposes giving up
the Golan for peace with Syria not
because he fears a return to the bad
old days, which he doesn't, but rather
because Israel simply is under no com-
punction to give it back. "Assad is
only negotiating with us because Syria
is weak, their economy is weak, their
army is weak," he said.
Gazit said he could countenance
giving up the Golan, but only after
Syria proved its peaceful intentions
beyond any doubt. "Why not give the
Golan back to Syria like England gave
Hong Kong back to China — after 99
years?" he suggested.
Regev was willing to return the
Golan after as little as a dozen years,
but only after a normalization that
would include joint Israel-Syrian busi-
nesses. "I want them to have a strong
self-interest in keeping the peace," he
explained.
Sokol said she was in favor of giving
up the Golan because it would mean
an end to the fighting in Lebanon, and
anyway the Golan hadn't proven a
security asset for Israel during the
1973 Yom Kippur War. "In a matter of
hours, the Syrians got all the way
down to about a mile-and-a-half from
Gadot," she noted.
Only Tamar Chen, pregnant with
her second child, drew on her expe-
riences under the guns of Syria when
explaining her view on the peace
negotiations. "I'm in favor of giving
up the Golan for peace because I
don't want my children to have to
live through what I lived through,"
she said. Li
