These fans are not designed for use
in the winter. If used without venti-
lation, the fan can create negative
pressure, drawing the byproducts of
combustion into the house.
Keane stressed that even a proper-
ly adjusted appliance can produce
carbon monoxide. The group is very
fortunate, he said, because they rec-
ognized something was wrong before
anyone lost consciousness.
He said poisoning is a cumulative
illness, with symptoms increasing as
carbon monoxide displaces oxygen in
the blood. The poisoning begins with
a headache, fatigue, dizziness and nau-
sea, then can develop into frontal
headaches, loss of consciousness and,
in a short amount of time, death.
All fuel-burning appliances and
equipment may produce carbon
monoxide — even when properly
adjusted — which underscores the
need for carbon monoxide detectors
in all homes. Carbon monoxide is an
odorless, tasteless, colorless poiso-
nous gas. Keane also stressed the
importance of inspecting all fuel-
burning appliances annually.
The Friendship Circle's four-day
winter camp is based at the Kahn
Building of the Jewish Community
Center in West Bloomfield. Volunteers
help the children, ages 5-16, some of
them in wheelchairs, enjoy a variety of
activities, including swimming, bowl-
ing and tobogganing.
Kalmanson said she starts each
day with the sight of pairs of special
friends "walking off together with
smiles that come right on" when the
boys and girls greet volunteers.
Rabbi Levi Shemtov said he and
his wife, Bassie, who direct the West
Bloomfield-based Friendship Circle,
were informed at 9 a.m. Tuesday that
our whole staff was in the hospital."
He said, "Canceling a day looked
forward to by a child was not an

option to us."
Bassie Shemtov then drove her
van to the Lubavitch Cheder in Oak
Park. With the approval of the
school's principal and help of teach-
ers, she handed out permission slips
to sixth-grade parents and left the
school with 15 new volunteers.
Kalmanson said the sleepover for
volunteers was an addition to camp
this year. Coming from different reli-
gious backgrounds and various
schools, she said the girls bond with
their special friend every day, then
bond with one another in their off-
hours.
After a one-day recovery period,
all of the original volunteers were
back with their special friends for a
Wednesday trip to the COSI Hands-
on Museum in Toledo. n
Our My Window on the World" and Once Upon
A Time' programs help preschoolers get a leg up.
I' e provide them with activities in math, reading, science and music. And since young
children learn best through hands-on-experience, it's a good idea to involve their feet, too.
