A Century Of
Jewish Detroit

The history of Detroit Jewry is a
richly woven story of people
fiercely loyal to their hometown
roots, no matter where life's jour-
neys may have taken them.
A native Detroiter whose fami-
ly roots in the Motor City date
back to circa 1910, I've always
been both fascinated and
intrigued by the grit, the caring
and the dreams of our communi-
ty. As spread out as we are geo-
graphically, we're more tightly knit
than many smaller Jewish com-
munities.
And that's no accident. Metro
Detroit is a national model for
religious pluralism because those
of us who call it our home recog-
nize that, in the end, we're all
Jews.
Tapping the knowledge of local
historian Sidney Bolkosky, Story
Development Editor Keri Guten
Cohen and Creative Services
Manager Jeffrey Torok have
assembled a remarkable portrait of
Jewish Detroit over the past cen-
tury (pages 5-26). It wasn't meant
to be all-encompassing but rather
a thoughtful overview.
If you have a chapter of the
Jewish Detroit story you'd like to
share, please keep it to about 300
words and send it to us. We'll
gladly consider it. Meanwhile,
enjoy your journey through
Detroit's Jewish past!

Shabbat Shalom!
