lmost 400 politically
interested Jews from
metro Detroit recent-
ly heard U.S. Sen.
Joseph Lieberman (D-Conn.)
speak of the Mideast peace
process, and the role American
Jews play in influencing
Congress.
The event, held Dec. 16 in a
packed room at the Knollwood
Country Club in West
Bloomfield, was sponsored by
the American Israel Public
Affairs Committee and Young
Adult Division of the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit.
Sen. Lieberman, an observant
Jew who has served in Congress
for 11 years, "has a unique per-
spective because he's looking at
the issues from a lot of different
angles," said Lisa Pernick of
AIPAC and a co-chair of the
annual event.
Last year, YAD co-sponsored
a talk by U.S. Senator Spencer
Abraham (R-Mich.). Pernick
said such events provide "YAD
with an opportunity to intro-
duce a lot of their members to
ways to become involved politi-
cally and to be informed in the
Jewish political arena."
