gogue commissions, including one that
hangs in Flint.
"I use the Bible for story material,"
he explains. "I pick a specific time and
activity and then I roll that mental
video until I hit a dramatic point in the
action, freeze the frame and attempt to
illustrate it."
An example would be a relief show-
ing Abraham and Isaac.
"I know Abraham takes Isaac to the
place of sacrifice, binds him and is just
about to raise his knife when an angel
says not to sacrifice his only son," recalls
Bleifeld, the father of Martin and the
late Robin Glass. "When the angel says
stop, I imagine how Abraham would lift
up his son and hug him just as hard as
he could, which is why I have Abraham
with arms and hands outsized to call
attention to the hug."
A modern Jewish-Chemed series,
also based on stories, has to do with
young Holocaust victims. After read-
ing the book I Never Saw Another
Butterfly, which is about the poetry
and scribbles of children in the Terezin
concentration camp, Bleifeld wanted
to make a statement about their
importance and translated their pencil
drawings into colorful paintings.
Another current project is a series
depicting women.
"I'm not a women's libber, but I
believe that the female has had a
tougher time in society," he says.
"Restrictions in society are more against
the female than the male. I also drifted
toward women because there's more
subtlety in their thinking."
Bleifeld seldom names his work
because he thinks names can be mis-
leading. He doesn't want to explain
what he has done, believing that his
rationale for the piece is irrelevant.
What is relevant, he stresses, is the idea
each viewer has about it.
As an example, he recalls a black
female figure seen by six nuns who had
commissioned a church sculpture and
were looking around his studio. They
wondered why the figure had a stack of
books on the side and an ax between
the books and the figure. They also
wondered why the head of the figure
was separated from the body.
"I asked each one what that sculp-
ture did for [her], and each of the six
stories — from sweetness and light to
horrible sex — was more interesting
than mine," he recalls. II
