sponsoring a free talk by Dr. Gideon
Greif 7:30 p.m. Monday, Dec. 27, at
the Jewish Community
Center n West
Bloomfield. His topic
is "We Were Tearless:
The Unique Story of
the Sonderkommando
in Auschwitz-
Birkenau."
A historian with
Dr. Gideon
Yad Vashem in Israel
Greif'
for more than 20 years,
Dr. Greif is active in
Yad Vashem's International School for
Shoah Studies.
In recent years, Dr. Greif has focused
on studying the Sonderkommando (spe-
cial commandos) of Auschwitz-
Birkenau, the Germans' largest extermi-
nation camp. The Sonderkommando
units were made up of Jewish prisoners
primarily assigned to the gas chambers
and crematoria. After a few months of
labor, these Jews were put to death. In
1995, Dr. Greif published his book We
Wept Tearless about the
Sonderkommando, available in Hebrew
and German only. His second book,
Sonderkommando, will appear next year.
Dr. Greif also is a producer on Israeli
radio and television. For two years, he
was chairman of the Second Generation
organization in Israel. Dr. Greif has been
involved in the public struggle to bring
Nazi war criminals to trial.

Award To MJAC
Helps ECHO

The HOPE Fund of the Community
Foundation for Southeastern Michigan
awarded a grant of $18,000 to the
Michigan Jewish AIDS Coalition. The
grant will provide support for Project
ECHO, the Educating our Community
about Homosexuality through Outreach
program.
Project ECHO, established by the
Michigan Jewish AIDS Coalition in
1998, encourages the inclusion of les-
bian, gay, bisexual and transgender peo-
ple in all facets of Jewish life. The pro-
ject seeks to reduce myths and miscon-
ceptions about homosexuality and to
increase understanding and sensitivity
within the Jewish community.
The HOPE Fund is administered by
the Detroit-based Community
Foundation for Southeastern Michigan.
