LETTERS As Yourselves The 5th Question! Why Pay IVfore For Passover? Take Advantage Of Our 6th Year Anniversary Special LETTERS FROM PAGE 33 issue makes it apparent that Torah totally rejects Darwin's approach to the evolution of man. Many Ortho- dox high schools in New York, where I come ?tom, teach Darwin's theory of evolution as part of their science cur- riculum. They note that even scientists call it a "theory," and explain to the students why the Torah rejects it. "Illogical" means that which is contrary to logic, that which is not comprehensible is not illogical. Obviously, the Torah version of cre- ation ex nihilo is something that cannot be truly comprehended by the human mind. Although the cre- ationism belief upon which Judaism is based defies understanding (just as God, by definition, defies under- standing), this certainly does not render our belief system illogical and in no way contradicts Rambam's approach of trying to reconcile Torah with logic. Rabbi Elimelech Silberberg West Bloomfield Older Adults Receive Care In response to a letter to the editor last week ("Services Needed For Elderly," Dec. 17), I would like to take this opportunity to inform the community about the many services that the Jew- ish community is providing to Jewish older adults living in non-Jewish nurs- ing homes and care. In 1997, the Jewish Home and Aging Services (JHAS) and Commis- sion on Jewish Eldercare Services (COJES) created the Jewish Commu- nity Chaplaincy Program. This very important program was created to provide outreach services to Jewish older adults living in non-Jewish facil- ities throughout the Detroit area. Monthly, our chaplains provide 100 facility visits and touch the lives of more than 700 residents. The chaplains' roles are varied. Our chaplains provide religious services and programs, make individual vis- its, assist with the vidui (the Jewish confessional prayer) and creatively utilize food, music and reminiscence to nurture these very special Jewish souls. In regard to Evergreen Health and Living Center, the Southfield facility to which the writer refers, one of our chaplains visits twice a month. Our program director works with day and afternoon religious schools, synagogues and non-affiliated groups to coordinate visits and programs to care facilities. For example, Yeshivat Akiva students, in the past year, pro- vided a Passover model seder, Rosh HaShana and Chanuka programs at Evergreen and nine other facilities. Depending on the group, visits or pro- grams are provided weekly, monthly or for Jewish holidays. Additionally, I am aware that the Temple Beth El Bikur Cholim visits the Evergreen facility regularly. The Jewish chaplaincy program also provides food packages that included honey cake for Rosh HaShana, Chanuka cookies and other holiday items. Fleischman Residence residents package these items for care facility residents. Recently, para-chaplaincy training was provided to individuals who will now be volunteering as part of our program. In addition, we are a resource to the staff of non-Jewish care facilities and provide The Jewish Resource Guide and training in the art of Jewish care giving. As you can see, we are working to meet the needs of all of our Jewish older adults residing in non-Jewish facilities. Volunteers are always wel- come. It is a labor of love, which reaps tremendous personal rewards. Sheyna Wexelberg-Clouser director, community outreach Jewish Home and Aging Services West Bloomfield Can Syria Make Peace? Talks between the Syrian foreign min- ister and Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Barak, while real, are a sham. This is because Syria was not repre- sented by its president, Hafez Assad, but a lowly appointee ("Hard Work Of Peace," Dec. 12). Either Israel should have sent a representative of equal rank or President Assad should have appeared. That peace must happen "because war no longer makes sense to either side" is nonsense. War in the Middle East does make sense because the Arabs see and believe it is a just way to regain their land. On the contrary, peace now exists on the Golan because it is still official- ly part of Israel; Israeli troops face Arab soldiers in force, and Jewish set- tlers farm and make the land Jewish.
