mountain of toy and food
donations — 27 days'
worth collected from eight
drop-off sites — greeted
the volunteers who came to help sort
and prepare them for distribution.
The Dec. 21 sorting party brought
together hundreds of items and 75
volunteers, under the guidance of
Alaine Waldshan, staff associate for
the Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit's Community Outreach and
Education Department.
This year's version of the
Volunteer Extravaganza, sponsored

A

by Federation's CORE department,
Young Adult Division and
Michigan/Israel Connection (orga-
nized by Allison Rabinovitz), fea-
tured the collection of items to
donate to 16 area human-service
agencies.
The food and toy drive was
instituted because this year
Christmas falls on Shabbat. The
collection replaced the annual
donation of time given to non-
Jewish employees who would other-
wise have to work on the holiday.
Waldshan says the generosity of

volunteers and donors made the col-
lection and distribution a success. All
agencies that requested items
received them before Christmas.
A last-minute inquiry for toy
donations from a Pontiac special-
education class that came after col-
lections were earmarked for specific
agencies proved to be beshert
(meant to be). The day after the
drive ended, Yeshivat Akiva in
Southfield found 50 more toys in
the school's drop-off bin. ri
