drive there leisurely and stay for four
months. And since we stopped rent-
ing, we've refurbished the place with
furniture geared more to our personal
tastes." They play golf, bridge and
take side trips with their three chil-
dren and four grandchildren.
Herb and Marge Rechter, Irwin
and Donna Goren and Ron and
Arlene Licht, who own Bloomfield
Hills residences, all bought condos in
the same building on upscale North
Ocean Boulevard in Boca Raton
almost 20 years ago and spend most
of the winter there. Its the best of
both worlds," says Herb. "We love
Michigan in the summer and we're
able to enjoy Florida in the winter.
Our children and grandchildren come
down on school breaks."
Condo restrictions prevent renting,
but "we wouldn't anyway because it's
our home," he says. A cleaning
woman whom they use in the winter
inspects the places periodically when
they're gone. All of the vacation home
owners have relatives check their resi-
dences in the Detroit area while
they're gone to make sure everything
is okay. All agree they would return
early only for simchas or emergencies.
Condo fees range from $200 to
$400 monthly nationwide, according
to Bill McShane, president of McShane
and Associates Inc., a management
company for 24 condo associations in
Oakland County.
"Fees usually are $300 to $400 in
Florida, $200 in northern Michigan
and less than $200 in Arizona
because the association does less for
the owner," he says.
"If any condo complex has a swim-
ming pool and a guardhouse, it auto-
matically means $40 to $50 more per
month." ❑
