CREATING A HIGHER STANDARD The Model Year 2000 with Egypt. We have a bitter normal- ization with Jordan. But I am a great believer in our coexistence with Palestinians. "The two sides in each country are looking for the fruits of peace. They're not satisfied. Neither the Israelis nor the Arabs." Among Peas attributes as a reporter, along with her fluency in Arabic language, is her acute famil- iarity with popular opinion in Arab nations. She reads Arabic newspapers regularly and speaks often with Arabs, from the upper echelons of power to everyday citizens. Just as much as her interviews with Egyptian, Jordanian, Lebanese and Palestinian leaders, Peri takes pride in conversing with Arabs in their universities, marketplaces and airports. This outlook has earned her the reputation as a source on Arab soci- ety as well as the peace process. To her, the contact she's enjoyed with Arabs and Israelis alike reflects her basic interest in her neighbors. "I like people," she says. "I meet people, I listen to them. I'm very curious to listen, to hear what they want to say. I also use my eyes. I walk in the streets; I meet people; I get an impression. And I read a lot." Although her nationality and reli- gion pose problems for Arabs who might otherwise speak with her, Peri expressed great fondness for Arab culture and people. Her affection remains strong for the place where she first traveled to cover peace talks. Since then, she says, she's been "dreaming of living in Cairo. Because Cairo is my first love, and I like Egypt very much." In spite of her attachment to Egypt, she couldn't really envision herself living there: "I don't think that they would appreciate me very much, being an Israeli." Peas career, with the many assign- ments in neighboring countries, allows her little time for vacations in those same places, she concedes. While in Michigan she was curious to visit the local Arab American community as well as the Jewish one, catch up with a few.acquaintances, perhaps relax at a Middle Eastern restaurant. But she says she wouldn't probably have the opportunity to explore on her own time. As if to prove her point, a car pulled up in front of the hotel short- ly thereafter. Peri stepped in, and went to another gathering before fly- ing to New York. II Niv '50 0 additional lease I Has Arrived. loyalty bonus for current Cadillac GMAC Smartlease es • ,Itoa movION.
