welve students from Yeshivat
Akiva in Southfield took part
in Panim el Panim: High
School in Washington, a
four-day learning program for Jewish
teens.
The November seminar was
designed to provide teens with the
knowledge and skills needed for
involvement and leadership in the com-
munity.
Students heard diverse perspectives
on abortion from Marjorie Signer of
the Religious Coalition for
Reproductive Choice and Susan
Muskets of the National Right to Life
Committee. Dr. Dos' Zakheim of
System Planning Corporation and Dr.
Robert Herman of the U.S.
Department of State raised issues on
peace and war. After each policy ses-
sion, the students examined Jewish
perspectives on these subjects.
The keynote address on "Jews in
the Political Process" featured Rabbi
Sidney Schwarz, president of the
Washington Institute for Jewish
Leadership and Values. The students
engaged in a value conflicts exercise,
debating the application of Jewish
values to policy dilemmas. They
also heard from Joel Barkin of the
American Israel Public Affairs

Committee; he spoke about the
relationship between the United
States and Israel.
The students explored the capitol
and visited the U.S. Holocaust
Memorial Museum. At the end of the
program, they met with U.S. Senator
Carl Levin to speak about their views
on issues of the day.
Panim el Panim is a program
designed to stimulate a serious com-
mitment to Jewish values iri the con-
text of wrestling with vital political
questions.
"I gained knowledge for the
responsibilities that I have as a Jewish
American citizen. I now plan to
become involved in political deci-
sions," said Aviel Hillman of
Southfield. His classmate Michelle
Faber of Southfield said, "I learned
that there are people who will listen
to you."
Other Akiva students participating
were Sarah Wolkinson, Mayer
Winkler, Avi Beneson, Tali Blanchard,
Fred Goldman, Daniel Greenbaum,
Kayla Jacobson and Ari Teger, all of
Southfield; Shira Traison of West
Bloomfield; and Devorah Cohen of
Oak Park.
They were joined by 70 students
from New York and Florida. 7
