nce and again, Marshall
Herskovitz and Ed Zwick
have brought quality pro-
gramming to television.
With such past efforts as thirtysome-
thing, My So-Called Life and Relativity
— and their current Once and Again,
airing Tuesday nights on ABC — the
duo are media darlings, now being
heralded for bringing mature drama
into vogue on the small screen.
In One and Again, the fortysome-
thing Herskovitz and Zwick have
paired to portray divorced parents,
challenged with raising teenaged kids,
on a dating go-round. Employing a
unique narrative device — personal
interviews filmed in black and white
— the innermost thoughts of the
characters are revealed.
In a medium stressing teen relation-
ships, doesn't this middle-age couple
appear to be, well, out of the Middle
Ages? When all is said and done, it's
sighs that matter. And Zwick and
Herskovitz are the best when it comes
to shows that showcase romance.
It helps, of course, that the two
partners feel romanced themselves —
by a patient network. "I think we've
been particularly blessed," says Zwick
of the relationship he and his produc-
ing pal have shared with ABC since
their, well, thirtysomethings. "There's
some essential history and trust that
when we come in to say, This is what
interests us,' they've always been will-
ing to say, 'Well, explore it.'"
So the Jewish Lewis and Clark of
TV have gone where few other medi-
um mavens have gone — into the 40s,
tracking what it feels like to have kids
of dating age while going out on dates
yourself.
Nothing personal, but is this stuff
personal? "What we do is definitely
personal, it always has been," says
Herskovitz, who set his first series in
Philadelphia, his hometown. But "per-
sonal doesn't necessarily mean autobi-
