steak, filet mignon,
porterhouse steak,
lamb chops, chicken
breast, whiskey ribs,
whiskey chicken
(Fishbone's version
of barbecued chick-
en baked with its
own barbecue sauce)
and a host of other items. ... including
those traditional New Orleans Po-Boy
sandwiches (shrimp or turkey or catfish
or chicken Caesar, etc., all served on
French bread and dressed with chopped
lettuce, tomato and Remoulade)
Deluxe hamburgers, too.
The New Orleans decor is every-
where ... with an authentic retail of
hot sauces ... Mardi Gras masks ... cof-
fee cups, neckties, etc. ... A lot of
wrought iron (reminiscent of the mag-
nificent ironworks in the French
Quarters of New Orleans) ... musical
instruments all around ... including an
old upright piano used by jazz bands
that play on Friday and Saturday
nights ... and at the Sunday brunch.
About that Sunday brunch —
10:30 to 3 p.m., by the way — it's a
real taste adventure of New Orleans
cooking ... with deep-fried Cajun
turkey, homemade praline, sweet pota-
toes, black-eyed peas, collard greens,
dessert station, omelet station
(includes alligator omelet), salad and
gumbo station ... and a lot of seafood.
Seating at Fishbone's of Southfield,
the former site of Carlos Murphy, is

sinks, large windows around the entire
restaurant fronting Northwestern
Highway, white-tiled back bar facing
an open kitchen ... with nine stools at
the bar ... colorful tile, large chandelier.
One of the large painted wall murals
could be of Storyville on Basin Street in
New Orleans, where jazz was born ... It
was also a red-light district in the early
1900s ... with piano players then called
professors ... In those days, jazz and
brothels went hand in hand .. The
mural shows women of ill repute and a
gent in the background at the piano.
Another mural is of a New Orleans
jazz, funeral ... a very authentic depiction
... Did you know, asks John, that people
were buried above ground because New
Orleans is six feet below sea level and
digging would be into the water?
Authenticity is very important ...
like in the serving of Alligator Voodoo
... The tail meat is the only part of the
alligator that should be used, and is ...
marinated in hot sauce, breaded and
deep-fried ... Bayou Stuffed
Mushrooms, stuffed with crabmeat,
celery and herbs, is covered with a
