he first play Arthur
Laurents ever
penned, Home of the
Brave, will be making
its second New York
stage debut — more
than 50 years after its
original Manhattan run.
Set in an Army base in
the South Pacific in
1945, the drama deals
with a young GI who
faces anti-Semitism.
Presented by the Jewish
Repertory Theater at
Playhouse 91, perfor-
mances are scheduled to
run through Dec. 26.
Playwright Laurents,
best known for mega-
hits like West Side Story,
Gypsy and Hallelujah
Baby, wrote Home of the
Brave in 1945. "But the
timing doesn't matter,"
says director Richard
Sabellico. "It's still rele-
vant today. The issues
that the people face in
the play are the same —
including rampant anti-
Semitism.”
In Home of the Brave,
four GIs are sent on a
map-making expedition
to assist the United
States in invading an
