ALAN HITSKY Associate Editor W hen Friedel Hopfeld celebrated her 95th birthday in Florida on Nov. 8, nothing made her hap- pier than to be with her 9-year- old great-granddaughter, Halle Hirsch. The two former Detroiters are very close. According to Halle's parents, Ron and Sandy Hirsch, the two spend a lot of time together in Boca Raton. Mrs. Hopfeld and the Hirsches moved to Boca Raton six years ago. Mrs. Hopfeld has her own apartment, with assistance, and visits the beauty shop each week. She enjoys going out to lunch and loves being with Halle. "There's an affinity between them," said Halle Hirsch and Freda Hopfeld Sandy Hirsch. "Halle's the only great-grand- child and they just have a special relation- ship. Freda makes her treats, and they watch Nickelodeon together. Freda often babysits for Halle, under her caretaker's watchful eye, and Halle enjoys sleepovers at her "Oma's" house. Mrs. Hopfeld escaped Nazi Germany with her husband Fred in 1937. The couple resided in Detroit and Huntington Woods. Mr. Hopfeld, a founding member of Gemilus Chasadim Synagogue, died in 1975. Prior to moving to Florida with the Hirsches, Mrs. Hopfeld lived at the Trowbridge Apartments in Southfield. The family celebrated Mrs. Hoppfeld's birthday with a surprise party at the Veranda Club of Boca Raton. And Halle wrote a spe- cial tribute to her "Oma," above. ❑ oN 12/10 1999 55
