Martin Gene and Alan Jay Kaufman
are incoming chairmen for the
Detroit Jewish Theological Seminary
Board. JTS is the spiritual and acad-
emic center of
Conservative
Judaism
worldwide.
The metro-
politan board
is responsible
for deepening
and strength-
ening the con-
nection
between the
JTS and the
Alan Kaufman
Detroit com-
munity. Gene
joins
Kaufman, who is beginning his third
year as chairman of the Detroit JTS
Board.
An activist in the Conservative
movement, Gene serves on the
board of Congregation Shaarey
Zedek and is chairing the capital
campaign for Camp Ramah in
Canada. He is a past president of
Hillel Day School of Metropolitan
Detroit in Farmington Hills. He has
served on the JTS Detroit board
since 1997 and was co-chairman for
the 1999 gala.
Last spring, Gene participated in
the weeklong Wagner Institute at
JTS. His daughter Faya is one of six
Detroit students starting their first-
year undergraduate studies at JTS
Albert A. List College of Jewish
Studies in New York City. Gene is a
partner in Professional Renovation
Services, a family-owned business.
Alan Kaufman is founder and
senior partner of the law firm
Kaufman and Payton in Farmington
Hills. He is also president of the
H.W. Kaufman Financial Group Inc.
and on the executive board of Israel
Bonds, for which he serves as chair-
man of its Prime Minister's Club.
Kaufman is a board member of Adat
Shalom Synagogue, Anti-
Defamation League, Cranbrook
Schools and Michigan State
University Development. Other
local and national charitable boards
he has served include the Jewish
Community Council and Fresh Air
Society. Kaufman is on the national
board of overseers for JTS' List
College. In 1996, Kaufman and his
wife, Sue Ellen, were honored by
JTS with its Second Century Award

for leadership.

Women's Panel
Discusses Ritual

A women's panel discussion tided
"Reclaiming Jewish Rituals: Where Do I
Belong?" will be presented 7:30 p.m.
Wednesday, Dec. 15, at the Kahn
Building of the Jewish Community
Center in West Bloomfield. Temple
Israel is also sponsoring the event, which
is part of the "Jewish Women: Then,
Now and What's Next?" series.
A panel representing the various
streams of Judaism will discuss rituals
that shape a Jewish woman's life and
give her a sense of belonging within
Judaism. Panelists include Yael Weil,
Rabbi Tamara Kolton, Rabbi Sheila
Goloboy and Rachel Yoskowitz, with
Rabbi Michele Faudem as moderator.
The free program is open to the
public.
