need to confer with couples before
making a decision on officiating. Yet
he's adamant he would not officiate at
a same-gender "wedding." Being
authorized by the people of Israel to
conduct ceremonies of Jewish mar-
riage, the term does not encompass
gay or lesbian relationships.
"I can't use that word," he said,
"but I don't reject using another
term for the relationship that could
be determined with the couple. I
would work with them to try to
devise appropriate recognition of the
relationship, welcoming their partici-
pation within the life of the congre-
gation, and discussing whatever
promises and blessings they would be
reciting.
"I (also) would need to explore
with them the many facets of Jewish
values and their commitment to the
Jewish people."
The Central Conference of
American Rabbis, the organized rab-
binate of Reform Judaism, has "not
taken a stand on same-gender officia-
tion," said Rabbi Elliot Stevens,
executive secretary. A resolution,
however, will be presented at a
March conven tion in Greensboro,
N.C. The organization represents
1,800 rabbis and 875 temples.
The "Resolution on Same-sex
Officiation," sponsored by the
Women's Rabbinic Network Board, is
based on a resolution passed by the
WRN in August. It urges the CCAR
"to bring the issue of honoring cere-
monies between two Jews of the same
gender to the floor of the plenum."
The resolution states, "Over 530
CCAR members have signed a state-
ment indicating their willingness to
officiate at the ceremonies of Jewish
same-sex couples." It adds "that the
relationship of a Jewish, same-gender
couple is worthy of affirmation
through appropriate Jewish ritual and
that each rabbi should decide about
officiation according to his/her own
informed rabbinic conscience."
Temple Beth El's Rabbi Syme stresses
that the decision of whether to officiate
at same-gender union ceremonies would
still be up to the individual clergy.
"The convention would never
establish a policy that would make any
requirement," he said.
