Congregation Shaarey Zedek
'Beth 444yelee( Wwsery School

SUMMER CAMPS

and Guys and Dolls this year.
In addition to its traditional day
camp programs, Cranbrook also offers
summer sessions focused on specific
sports, such as soccer and lacrosse, as
well as a theater school and a summer
jazz ensemble with guest artists saxo-
phonist George Benson and trumpeter
John Trudell.
For preschoolers, activities are pretty
similar wherever you go, heavy on wad-
ing pools, petting farms and sing-a-
longs. A high counselor/camper ratio is
important for close supervision.
Adat Shalom and Shaarey Zedek
Beth Hayeled run camps exclusively for
the toddler set, including a "Terrific
Twos" group run by Shaarey Zedek
that does not require toilet training.
Shaarey Zedek also offers parent-tod-
dler programs at its Laker Educational
Complex for 15-30 month olds.
Other area camps offering preschool
programs include the Jewish Center's
"K'tonton" division, Beth Yehudah/Bais
Yaakov, Summer Impressions and
Ganeinu.
The Judaic level of metro Detroit
camps runs the gamut. Obviously,
Jewish programming is a moot point at
the secular camps such as Cranbrook
and Willoway, although such camps
host many Jewish campers.
At the synagogue camps and at the
traditional four week JCC camps,
efforts are made to infuse activities
with Jewish content by including
Jewish songs, special days like "Israeli
Day," and Jewish holiday themed arts
and crafts.
At Camp Simcha, an affiliate of
Yeshivas Darchei Torah, the morning
hours are devoted to solid Torah learn-
ing, although in a more relaxed atmos-
phere than during the school year.
While open to all denominations, all
the Orthodox-run camps assume there
is a level of camper comfort with
peripheral issues such as reciting bless-
ings over food and grace after meals,
understanding Hebrew phrases and
Jewish concepts, and modest dress.
Frequently, camp activities such as
songs, skits, and crafts projects are
themed to develop different middot —
character traits such as honesty, unity,
helpfulness. Beth Yehudah/Bais Yaakov
Day Camps and Camp Simcha incor-
porate the mitzvot of tzeolaka and
chesed into their programs when
campers visit and entertain in a nursing
home, and participate in a swim-a
thon, which last year raised thousands
of dollars to benefit (the non-related)
Camp Simcha, an international camp
for Jewish children with cancer. O
