THE
AUCTION AT
more work because they come in
knowing nothing. The dancers who
are returning sometimes have to learn
a new number or don't remember
everything or might have to take a
new position in line depending on
height, so everyone has to rehearse at
the same time."
Haberman also is responsible for
developing the new numbers.
"I take one number or one scene at
a time," says the director-choreograph-
er. "If I think about the whole show, I
get too overwhelmed. I first zero in on
what I want to accomplish in one
scene, who's in it and where it's going
to take place. I work very closely with
a dance arranger, and he and I decide
[on the songs].
'After I have a big-picture idea for
each number, I slowly start thinking of
how I want the dancers to enter and
what would be exciting to do. The
arranger fits the music to what I want
to accomplish, and it becomes a back-
and-forth, give-and-take process."
Haberman and Michael Fiur, vice-
president of entertainment for Radio
City Entertainment, say that Jewish
audiences should consider this a show
of general appeal despite the
Christmas theme. Fiur says people
who might think "The Nativity" seg-
ment, which features live animals, is
too religious have the option of leav-
ing before the last number, although
few do that.
"I'm Jewish and a number of peo-
ple who work under me on the
Christmas Spectacular are Jewish, and
I've found that you don't have to be
Christian to appreciate the wonder
and majesty with which the Christians
celebrate the holiday," Fiur says.
"This is a wonderful show for the
family in terms of things like the
dancing teddy bears and the
Nutcracker scene. It's always fun for
kids to see the wooden soldiers."
Haberman already is anticipating
the Y2K production.
"Next year's show is in the back of
my mind," she says. "We usually don't
start talking about the next one until
after the first of the year. Right now, I
have to finish getting the rest of the
shows open." LJ
