all felt traumatized and violated.
My husband and I contacted a

The ADL was first and foremost in

chat room, Cohen said; it would be
like trying to stop someone from say-
ing something before the words were
out of his mouth.
No specific number of anti-Semitic
or incidents on the Internet is avail-
able at this point, Cohen said.
However, the ADL has seen an
increase in this type of message.
"We see it in chat rooms that peo-
ple are trolling around looking for
supporters," he said. "A lot of times
it's even more surreptitious. They will
go into legitimate chat groups, insert
inflammatory statements, either to
flame people or look for supporters."
The ADL, working along with the
FBI, was able to trace the threats
received by the Goniks to the
Netherlands. However, they were
unable to determine the specific source.
"The person was very sophisticat-
ed," Cohen said. "They were able to
bounce (the message) off a Web server

in Washington state."
Tracing the message was further
complicated because the Gonik family
had deleted the ICQ software.
The ADL recommends that chil-
dren stay away from Internet chat
rooms. Internet users who receive
threats of any sort should save the
messages and remember the situation
in which they were received.
"In addition to the message you see,
there are also code words you don't see,
or don't understand," Cohen said.
These codes help law enforcement
go back to the software provider.
After more than a year of investiga-
tion, the ADL determined the mes-
sages Bradley Gonik received posed no
real threat because the senders had no
idea of the family's identity or address
and, after the initial flurry of threats,
the messages were not repeated.
"I am not worried that someone is
keeping track of him," Cohen said. 7
