honor of the late Alexandra Graham.

W

ith tear-filled eyes, guests
came to remember a
young girl. The purpose
of the evening was a cele-
bration of her life, but the tears still fell.
At Adat Shalom Synagogue, 425
guests of the Israel Cancer Association of
Michigan came together last week to
honor the life of Alexandra Graham, a
West Bloomfield High School student
who died of cancer last January.
The evening, "A Tribute to Alex
Graham: A Celebration of Her Life and
Accomplishments," followed the theme
"An Angel of Love," inspired by her
friend Jeremy Wolfe's poem of the same
name, written for Alex.
Viewing a video, guests listened as
friends and family shared stories of
Alex's courage, assertiveness, toughness
and strength. To a background of "It's
All Been Done," a song by her favorite
singing group the Barenaked Ladies,
home videos were shown. Times of her
life were captured on tape, including
Alex playing softball with her team, cele-
brating her bat mitzvah, dancing in a
recital and lounging with her brothers.
Bed Falbaum, spokesperson for the
event, declined to offer a dollar amount
collected, but says it was the Michigan
chapter's largest fund-raiser to date.
Contributions helped launch an anti-

smoking education campaign for Israeli
children.
A plaque presented to Alex's parents,
in her name, by Ernie Curtis, vice presi-
dent of the Michigan chapter, will hang
in the youth area of Adat Shalom, where
the Grahams are members.
The wording, from the 27th Psalm,
was chosen by Alex's mother, Susie
Graham: "The Lord is my light and my

help: whom shall Ifear? The Lord is the
stronghold of my life; of whom shall I be
afraid?"

Adat Shalom Cantor Howard Glantz
played Alex's choice of music on her
treasured guitar, presented to him by her
parents after her death. Alex's father, Bill
Graham, says the cantor ended his per-
formance with a song Alex had often
requested him to sing for her: "MTA,"
the 1959 Kingston Trio tune. With the
song's humor and political undertone,
Graham says, 'Any tears that came out
during the video were gone, ending on a
high note."
And that was the purpoSe of the
evening, he says, to honor and "celebrate
Alex's life — not dwell on how short it
was, but how full it was."
The dinner was chaired by Dr. Gary
Endelson, emceed by Robert Roth and
included tributes by Adat Shalom Rabbi
Efry Spectre, Dr. Charles Main, Alex's
physician, and Hannan Lis, president of
the Israel Cancer Association's Michigan
Chapter.. ❑
