Owner Steve Szatmari's wife,
Darlene, makes all the pastries ...
strudel (apple, cottage cheese or cherry
fillings,) dobosh torte, a delightful
cream torte tasting like a French
Napoleon dessert; somloi (three-layer
torte cake with chocolate, vanilla and
chocolate sauce) and Hungarian wal-
nut torte.
The last three years, Hungarian
Rhapsody has been given Best
Presentation awards at the annual
downriver Business Expo ... and with
good reason ... But the very fine pre-
sentation must rank second to its
ambiance and realness.
Most dishes, like Fasirozott (indi-
vidual Hungarian meat loaves) can be
special-ordered without much notice
... Numerous Hungarian dishes may
not be on the menu ... Little call for
them might not warrant the space.
When Hungarian dishes like
Fasirozott, that are based on centuries-
old tradition can be gotten, it tells you
something about a restaurant's ability.
Also, making its own noodles for
dishes like Kaposztas Teszta (sauteed
cabbage with home-made noodles or
Turos Teszta, with cottage cheese.
Sure, there are also the bevy of •
Hungarian specialties many people
crave ... like boneless chicken breast
Paritzsi (in egg batter and sauteed) ...
and the popular Transylvania Wooden
Platter ... The combination for two or
more is served on Friday or Saturday
only.
I like the fact, too, that Hungarian
Rhapsody realizes that not everyone in
a party may enjoy Hungarian food ...
Because of this, and smartly so, at din-
ner, it also prepares international
broiled dishes like steak Budapest (a
New York strip topped with onions,
bacon, green pepper and mushroom
sauce) ... or tournedo Rossini (beef
medallion with a Madeira sauce and
foie Bras) ... or an eight-ounce filet ...
or a dish it calls Steak and Shrimp
Budapest style (filet and sauteed
shrimp on a bed of rice.)
It has its own signature dish, too ...
Veal Rhapsody ... sauteed veal medal-
lion with asparagus sauce.
This November was the sixth
anniversary of Hungarian Rhapsody ...
Six years of much satisfaction.
BOB TALBERT, the Detroit Free
Press' many-faceted, multi-talented
columnist who recently passed on,
must have been as responsible for
waking up our state's inhabitants as
the proverbial cup of coffee ... So
many readers were literally out of their
minds from "Monday Moanin'''
straight on through the week, but Bob
