playing Judaica all year round.
Menorahs and dreidels used to come
out only at the holidays, but they are
on display. They are collectibles, just
like Limoges," notes Levine.
Why the fixation with Chanuka
tops? For Baltimore artist Ann
Shamash, it's more than that. As she
crafts her decorative clay menorot, she
tries to keep in mind the powerful
pedagogic potential of these items.
"To me a dreidel is an incredible
teaching tool," she said. "You can
teach on the level of a 3-year-old all
the way up to an 80-year-old. If you
are teaching the alphabet, for exam-
ple, you can use all your senses.
There is touch and sight, and there
is also kinetics: it twists and turns, so
there is that whole extra sense."
On a deeper level, she notes that
the four letters on the dreidel repre-
sent the Hebrew phrase, "a great mir-
acle happened there." Starting from
that point, she said, "you can teach
greatness, the sense of smallness and
largeness, and you can also teach
what a miracle is. You can go into so
many different levels of detail."
Whatever it is that attracts collec-
tors, it clearly has a strong pull.
New dreidels have surged into the
marketplace lately, as artists push the
limits of design to put a new "spin"
on this ancient item.
There are dreidels with Winnie the
Pooh and Mickey and Minnie, plus
ceramic, glass, pewter, sterling silver.
Among the most whimsical dreidels
are those produced by the workshop of
Maryland artist Gary Rosenthal. His
9-inch-tall sculptural top uses mod-
ernistic metal design to create a sense
of motion and playfulness. Check out
www.regines.com/dreide12.jpg for a
peek.
Today people are giving them as
commemorative gifts at bar and bat
mitzvahs. Rosenthal makes a wed-
ding dreidel with the traditional
words — 'I am my beloved's and my
beloved is mine' — instead of the
usual dreidel letters.
While many dreidels are for dis-
play, some suggest that people may be
collecting dreidels to reinforce Jewish
observance. One retailer said, "It's
something you can pass onto your
grandchildren that has some special
meaning." Fl
