Jewels In The Crown

Meet three women whose leadership was honored at the General Assembly in Atlanta.

he United Jewish Communities' General Assembly in Atlanta last week heard from scores of
women, but three among them — Ruth Messinger, Shulamit Reinharz and Alice Shalvi —
stood out for their intellect, experience, humor and compassion. In the accompanying pro-
files, you can meet these leaders and feel their energy and optimism.
Other reports from the meeting detail the problems researchers are facing as they design a question-
naire for a Jewish census in the United States next year, recount the involvement of students in the GA
activities, note the remarks of Vice President Al Gore and wrap up the insights local leaders gained
from the meeting. A commentary on the meeting by columnist J. J. Goldberg is on page 39.
