BEAT THE Temple Hosts Rabbi Hoffman Temple Kol Ami's annual Scholar-in- Residence Shabbat, in honor of founding Rabbi Emeritus Ernst J. Conrad, will host Dr. Joel Hoffman, an expert in translation and ancient Hebrew. Dr. Hoffman's faculty appoint- ments include Brandeis University and Hebrew Union College-Jewish Institute of Religion in New York. He serves as Hebrew consultant to several publishing houses and is chief translator for the series Minhag Ami: My People's Prayerbook. At worship services 8 p.m. Friday, Dec. 10, Dr. Hoffman will speak on "How to Read Jewish Texts: Science, Theology and Spirituality." He will address how scholars have under- stood texts and incorporated them into their lives. At 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11, prior to 11 a.m. Shabbat services, Dr. Hoffman will present "How Do We Know What the Hebrew Means?" He will lead a group study of a text, demonstrating what goes into a translation, how and why var- ious translations differ, and how to gain the most from reading a trans- lated text.
