Rabbi Hoffman

Temple Kol Ami's annual Scholar-in-
Residence Shabbat, in honor of
founding Rabbi Emeritus Ernst J.
Conrad, will host Dr. Joel Hoffman,
an expert in translation and ancient
Hebrew.
Dr. Hoffman's faculty appoint-
ments include Brandeis University
and Hebrew Union College-Jewish
Institute of Religion in New York.
He serves as Hebrew consultant to
several publishing houses and is
chief translator for the series Minhag
Ami: My People's Prayerbook.
At worship services 8 p.m. Friday,
Dec. 10, Dr. Hoffman will speak on
"How to Read Jewish Texts: Science,
Theology and Spirituality." He will
address how scholars have under-
stood texts and incorporated them
into their lives.
At 9:30 a.m. Saturday, Dec. 11,
prior to 11 a.m. Shabbat services,
Dr. Hoffman will present "How Do
We Know What the Hebrew
Means?" He will lead a group study
of a text, demonstrating what goes
into a translation, how and why var-
ious translations differ, and how to
gain the most from reading a trans-
lated text.

JCC Conducts
Adult Seminars

Adults who wish to enhance their
Jewish knowledge may attend the
Jewish Community Center's
Seminars for Adult Jewish
Enrichment (SAJE).
Sessions are planned for Jan. 25-
Feb. 10 and Feb. 22-March 9 at the
JCC locations in West Bloomfield and
Oak Park. More than 50 courses are
being offered on a variety of topics,
taught by local rabbis, cantors, educa-
tors, scholars and community leaders.
Chairing the winter sessions are
Irwin Alterman, Sharon Hart and
Dr. Lynda Giles.
The seminars are co-sponsored by
the Jewish Community Center and
the Agency for Jewish Education
with support from the Jewish
Federation of Metropolitan Detroit's
Alliance for Jewish Education and
the Jewish News.
