O

ne mystery in plot and a
bit of a mystery in person-
alities bring some dramatic
twists to the new musical
Martin Guerre, which stops at the
Fisher Theatre Dec. 1-1 .9 before its
Broadway debut in April.
Set against the backdrop of
Catholic-Protestant discord in 16th-
century France and grounded in actu-
al events, the musical play hangs on
the identity of a soldier who comes
to a small town and claims to be
Martin Guerre, a native son who had
disappeared seven years earlier. An
investigation, trial and arrival of
another man claiming the same iden-
tity unravel the tale.
On a smaller scale, it's harder to
figure out why so many people
connected to this production
