With Pets

If you're driving:
• Take along bottled water or water
from your tap. That's what your pet
is used to and water from other
places could cause diarrhea.
• As a precaution against motion
sickness, don't give your dog
water or food for two hours
before you start out.
• Request a first-floor motel room
that is away from the vending
area or pool. The quieter the
room, the fewer the errant barks.
• When you stop, leash your dog
before opening the door. You
don't want to lose him in unfa-
miliar territory.
If you're flying:
• Expect to pay a one-way fee of
about $50 per pet and provide
your own officially approved pet
carrier. Or you can buy one from
most airlines for roughly $45 to
$95, depending on size.
• Remember that summer is the
worst time for air travel with dogs.
Small dogs that fit under the seat in
approved carriers aren't at risk. But
large dogs that must travel as cargo
could overheat on scorching tarma-
cs. Non-stop flights are preferable,
and try to plan your trip for early
morning or night to avoid the
worst of the heat. Most airlines
won't haul a pet if the ground tem-
perature at the departure, arrival or
connecting gate exceeds 85 degrees
or dips below 45.
• Typically, vets strongly recom-
mend against sedating pets dur-
ing air travel because many ani-
mals have been overmedicated
and suffered or died as a result.
For calming purposes, put one
of your old shirts in the pet's
crate so that he can at least be
close to your scent.
• Remember to get a current
health certificate from your vet
before you go; most airlines
