can say Happy Chanuka.
All these tips and more are in the
book Jewish Holiday Style by Rita
Milos Brownstein (Simon &
Schuster, $27.50). The book presents
entertaining tips and family projects
for ten major holidays accompanied
with step-by-step illustrations.
Just like Martha, she has some
catchy ideas. How about a honey-
tasting party to celebrate the sweet-
ness of Rosh HaShana? She suggests
hosts ask New Year guests to create an
accomplishment book filled with
goals and promises for the coming
year. For Yom Kippur, Rita recom-
mends to think of the fast as "a day
spa for the soul." Now, could Martha
have said that better?
With Chanuka beginning Friday,
Dec. 3, here are some more Ritaisms.
Create an heirloom menorah. She
talks about using blow torches and
working with metals which even she
admits the novice might need help.
But, her other menorot ideas are
crafty yet stylish. One menorah uses
children's alphabet blocks to spell out
the work Chanuka for the base and
wood balls for the candleholders.
Painted brightly, the piece becomes a
lovely, family menorah that is a nice
accent in a child's room.
For something simple and easy,
Rita recommends an olive oil meno-
rah made from shot glasses.
What would the Festival of Lights

be without some decorative candles?
Rita shares her secret of making
beeswax candles and even reminds the
readers that 44 candles are needed.
Not only can making beeswax candles
become a fun family project, it's eco-
nomical. Rita says, "Beeswax candles
are unbelievably pricey, and yours will
cost a mere fraction of the price."
She updates the giving of gelt
(money) by placing coins in an organza
bag. On a charitable note, she includes
a scroll containing the Maimonides'
Eight Degrees of Charity.
For gift wrapping, Rita suggests
glitzy metallic blue paper, foil-
wrapped chocolate gelt and dreidels
to enhance the package.
What would a Jewish book be
without recipes? For Chanuka she has
some interesting latke recipes as well
as some interesting cookies. Sweet
potato latkes and marzipan dreidels
are certainly different.
For an easy, fun project the paper
dreidels make wonderful decorations.
or are even festive place cards.

CLASSIC POTATO LATICES
MAKES 18 PANCAKES
2 lbs. Russet potatoes (8 medium)
peeled
1 medium yellow onion
2 large eggs, beaten
1/2 c. matza meal
2 t. kosher salt
1/2 t. cracked black pepper
Vegetable oil for frying

Grate potatoes and onions in food
processor, using the shredding blade.
Remove mixture to a bowl and replace
the shredding blade with the steel blade.
In batches, pulse process the
potato mixture for 10-15 seconds.
