Guests entered to see table numbers on cards attached to balloons hanging from the foyer ceiling ... a bevy of passed and stationary hors d'oeuvres, with people asking where Shirley was, and a friend answering, "She's proba- bly in the kitchen cooking." At his table, a look-alike Marilyn Monroe sang, "Happy Birthday" a la John F. Kennedy, to "Big Eddie" while the candles flickered on a large three-tiered cake ... blown out by Eddie, Shirley and their family. At the mike, he recalled his 50th birthday party at the Grecian Gardens in Greektown, where a couple of buses brought the attendees ... and the cake was brought in by a belly dancer ... Then came oodles of laugh- ter-filled quips ... like acknowledging one of his daughters, "Who has given me three beautiful sons-in-law" ... On a more serious note, Eddie acknowledged his family, many friends, and secretary of 43 years. Brother Lester Rosenberg celebrat- ed his 84th birthday the day after the party ... and friends Morris "Moody" and Mickey Beresh, their 56th anniversary also the next day. Couldn't have asked for a more genial table ... with former spots writer and WXYZ-TV and network sportscaster Dave Diles and wife Kay; Jerry and Marge Robbins; Ben and Florence Feinstein, and Bernie and Cathy Schrott. Entertainment by sound-alikes of Dean Martin, Liza Minelli and Frank Sinatra were hired from Florida by Shirley ... and put on a good show for the attendees. But none like the stand-up comedy of the birthday boy himself ... Eddie is always so much fun. The many big national name bands that came to South Haven in those days never played at any of the resorts because the groups were too large, many times over 20 pieces, says Shirley, whose parents, Minnie and Morris Baron, owned Baron's ...
