Midrash:

• "A Final Midrash" by Richard
Fliegel. Even the most hard-boiled
detective fiction readers won't be able
to solve this one (though they certainly
will think they have at least 20 times
before reaching the end). This story
focuses on a handful of rabbis, a Jewish
detective and a dead man's last message:
6:1. Does it refer to a biblical verse, a
vital page in an important Jewish text?
Each turn of the page takes the reader
on another little adventure.
• "Poison" by Ellen Rawlings is the
story of a romance writer found dead,
and not because she drowned in the
syrupy words of her own insufferable
novels, as any sane person might sup-
pose. No. Meredith Whitney, a.k.a.
Myrna Weinstein, is found poisoned.
As the case is being solved, readers
meet up with jealous writers, former
sweethearts and so many others who
could have committed the crime. No
doubt Meredith/Myrna uttered some
flowery words — "Ah, sweet agony
that brings me to these last of days!"
before she went on to that great big
romance novel in the sky. Readers will
be tempted to skip every word in this
story and jump to the end as they
wait for this fun mystery to be unrav-
eled. But don't, of course.
• "Wailing Reed" by Janice
Steinberg blends klezmer music, a
rock band and a missing, and valu-
able, recording into an intriguing
story. You'll never figure out the bad
guy in this.
• "Kaddish" by Batya Swift Yasgur.
OK, this may be one you'll be able to
solve, though chances are good you
won't know why the perpetrator did
it. Besides, Yasgur is such a great
writer (creating an intriguing charac-
ter in just a few pages) that it's plea-
sure enough to read her writing.
Warning: Not all the stories in this
book fall into the realm of outstand-
ing. Unfortunately, Faye Kellerman,
usually a wonderful author, has a
pretty silly (and not especially com-
pelling) story in this book.
And despite Rabbi Raphael's best
intentions, not all the stories are
decidedly Jewish (like Howard Engel's
"The Reading.")
Still, for the most part this is a
delicious collection of tales for the
mystery fan or anyone who simply
enjoys good short stories.
