"Tops on my list... Their Filet Mignon"

"Stoma #1,"' brooch. Another
theme important to
Cooperman's jewelry is
revelation and concealment.
Some mixed metal surfaces
flare, opening to reveal gems
or fossilized organic matter.

`Although there's an image in my
mind, each piece changes quietly
as I work on it," says Jacobs.

"They play on the notion of
what we're actually looking at.
Loupe is kind of a pun. A
loupe is a tool used by jewelers
to magnify items, and tools
allow us to access interiors and
),
see other worlds.
Cooperman likes to use old
tools in forming his jewelry
because it gives him a sense of
connection to craftsmen of
the past. One hammer in his
studio, for example, is dated
Oct. 2, 1904.
"I use old tools when I
teach how to set up a studio,"
Cooperman says "While I can
find older tools at lower costs,
I really love the continuity, the
idea that somebody else used
them on a day-to-day basis."
Cooperman, whose work
has been part of an earlier
exhibit at Sybaris, studied
marine biology and medical
illustration before switching to
painting and literature at
Oneonta in New York, where
he also discovered his interest
in jewelry.
As his career progressed, he
made sure that every mark was
intentional and contributed to
what he wanted to convey.
Everything is finished — the
backs, ends and even the rivets.
"Metal's in our blood," says
Cooperman, who gives his
jewelry a textured, rough-
hewn look . "It's got to do
with us. We've named time
periods after metals that
helped forge early civiliza-
tions, like the Bronze Age." LI

The works of Ferne
Jacobs and Andrew
Cooperman will be
shown through Dec. 4 at
the Sybaris Gallery, 202
E. Third Street, Royal
Oak. (248) 544-3388.
