touch with Pepi, and he kept all of
their correspondence, even though
she had asked him to burn the let-
ters and pictures. Before his death in
1977, he sent her all of the material,
which, along with other documents
she saved, makes up the archive she
auctioned.
When asked why she thinks
Vetter risked his life to marry her,
Beer answers matter-of-factly, "He
fell in love with me. He didn't do it
to save a Jew.
In the book, it's clear that he was
difficult as a husband and father, but
she remains grateful to him. He's now
living in South Germany and, accord-
ing to Angela, doesn't know of the
existence of this book.

Beer credits her daughter with
pushing her to finally speak about
her experience, and it wasn't until
the book was written that Angela
learned all of the details. Now 55
and a mother of three, she got to
know her father at age 16 when she
visited him in Germany. She found
him at first charming, then violent;
she hasn't been in contact with him
for years.
For Angela — who is, as Rosensaft
points out, a child of a survivor, a hid-
den child and the child of a Nazi —
learning about the past is "a bit of a
Pandora's box. Once its opened, you
can't close it again," she says. "It has
been difficult to live with. I do suc-
cessfully try to put it away."
Writing the book, Beer says, made
her remember things she had long
forgotten. "Whenever I was in diffi-
culties or in danger, there came a
miracle," she says. Sometimes, the
voice of her days in Brandenburg —
the soft, small, halting voice of a law
student pretending to be an ignorant
nurse's aide — returns to her.
Susan Dworkin, a playwright and
author of 12 books, who worked
closely with Beer in Israel to put this
story on paper, credits her experi-
ence in writing for theater in help-
ing her to capture Beer's voice,
which she does well.
