In private conversation and while
facing an audience, Beer seems hum-
ble, ever aware how fortunate she is to
have survived. "God was looking out
for me," she says.
In 1938, after the Nazis took con-
trol of Austria, Beer was forced to give
up her legal studies. She and her
mother (her father died earlier) were
separated in 1941 when Edith was
sent to do forced labor. She kept in
touch by letter with Pepi, her first
love, who was the son of a Jewish
father and Christian mother.
Sixteen months later, she returned
to Vienna and learned that her mother
had been taken away. Rather than
reporting for "resettlement" as
ordered, she went underground.
Beer found help in surprising
places. Through a friend from the
labor camp, she was introduced to a
Nazi businesswoman, who put her in
contact with a sympathetic Nazi offi-
cial who instructed her in obtaining
false papers. As he suggested, a
Christian friend, seven years younger,
applied for a new set of documents
claiming that hers were lost, and Beer
took the original set.
With a new identity as an Aryan,
she set off for Munich. On the train,
she "murdered the personality I was
born with and transformed myself back
into a caterpillar. That night I learned
to seek the shadows, to prefer silence."
When she arrived and saw the gai-
ety of Munich and Hitler's picture
everywhere, she thought, "Now I am
like Dante. I walk through hell, but I
am not burning." She found work as a
nurse's aide and spent time exploring
the city on her own. At an art gallery
