PRESENTING ANOTHER GREAT

SHIRLEE BLOOM

has new material, glamour and lots of
surprises. The glam is due in part to
the talent of Bob DeMora, who not
only designs for Bette but also has cre-
ated the costumes for some of
Hollywood's most memorable films,
including Marathon Man, Risky
Business and The Birdcage.
A question that I often get asked is
what part Judaism plays in Bette's life.
Lucky Sophie gets lots of gifts for both
Chanukah and Christmas, always
accompanies her mom to temple for
the High Holy Days and participates
in the family Passover seder.
Some of the other questions that
I'm asked about Bette include: When
does she relax? When was the last
time she scrubbed the toilet? Do her
family and friends think she's funny?
The answers are as follows: At her
home in Hawaii; it's been a long time;
and do your kids think that you're
funny?
As for the friends, during a get-
together I attended with some of
them, including Rosie O'Donnell,
Goldie Hawn, Sarah Jessica Parker,
Sandra Bernhard and Madeline Kahn,
the talk was mostly about the environ-
ment, politics and children. Perhaps
one of America's Funniest Females will
eventually be a presidential candidate.
Bette's career is in a constant state of
reinvention. How she can possibly top
The Johnny Carson Farewell and "The
Millennium Tour" is beyond me, but
knowing Bette, a distinct probability.
She and her partner, Bonnie
Bruckheimer, formed All Girl
Productions many years ago and have
recently acquired the rights to Divine
Secrets of the Ya-Ya Sisterhood, which
they will produce as well as develop as
a TV sitcom for Bette. I think that the
public would love a dose of dizziness
on a weekly basis, especially if Bette
plays a salty character like the one she
played in her Get Shorty cameo.
Compared to "The Divine Miss
Millennium Tour," a TV sitcom
sounds like cake to me. But, of course,
I don't have to do it ... that is, unless
she gives me a walk-on ... or a one-
liner ... or, maybe a part ...

Bette Midler's "The Divine
Miss Millennium Tour" visits
the Palace of Auburn Hills 8
p.m. Friday, Nov. 12. Tickets
are $150.30/$80.501$49.50.
Fifty cents from each ticket
will be donated to charity.
