eshivat Akiva's varsity girls
basketball team is half-way
through its six-game season
and still looking for a vic-
tory on the court.
But the team and its supporters are
champions off-court, inviting last
week's opponent, Academy of Detroit
in Ferndale, to a post-game dinner of
kosher pizza and salad.
"After a little prodding, all the girls
from both teams sat down and had a
good time," said Akiva coach Ken
Kohn, who began the annual tradi-
tion a few years ago. The game and
dinner were at the D. Dan & Betty
Kahn Building of the Jewish
Community Center in West
Bloomfield.
Akiva's girls practice on
Wednesdays and Sundays at the
Jimmy Prentis Morris Building of the
Jewish Community Center in Oak
Park. Akiva's new school building, the
former Beth Achim Synagogue in
Southfield, does not have a gym.
Coach Kohn said Akiva "plays a
diversity of teams. This is not just
about basketball, its about meeting
people. The girls had a good time, and
the coaches get to sit down with the
parents. It's healthy and rewarding."
For its remaining games, Akiva
plays Kensington Academy, Oakland
Christian and West Side Christian. 11
