"I saw that she had the talent,"
says Berger. When she was in junior
high, she wanted to take a drama
workshop and she did it on her own.
But at that time, she said it wasn't for
her and that was OK with me, too.
"I didn't discourage her, but I also
didn't push it. I could see the talent
she had, but she had to realize it for
herself. Eventually, [in high school],
she did."
Trout's grandfather, Joseph
Pearlman, agrees. The part-time
Michigan, part-time California resi-
dent recalled his granddaughter's apti-
tude for pretend play as a small child.
"She was always quite convincing,"
he said.
After hiring a manager, Trout
began to go to one audition after
another. And soon, she began to rack
up guest appearances and small roles
on shows like Beverly Hills 90210,
where she played a strung-out hooker
("If you are going to be on 90210,
you've just got to be a strung-out
hooker. It is the only way to go") and
in movies like Never Been Kissed (she
was hand picked by Drew Barrymore
for the role of Sara, "a ditsy girl").
Her experience led her to try out
for the part of Chloe, beating out
2,000 other young women. Trout
now works several hours a week
learning her lines, rehearsing the
scenes and taping the show, some-
thing she wouldn't trade for the
world.
Although she looks forward to
broadening her experience, right now
she is content with having the TV
show and devoting all of her time
and energy to it.
"It's been like I want to pinch
myself because I must be dreaming,"
she said.
To deal with the stress and anxiety,
Trout turns to what she has learned
through classes in Scientology.
However, she still considers herself
Jewish.
"[Scientology] helps me expand
spiritually. It gives me a greater sense
of myself and life and different ways
of handling problems and situations,"
Trout said. "I consider myself Jewish,
but I am non-practicing. I celebrate
Chanukah, those things. It is a very
rich religion that I have a lot of
respect for. I would love to know
more, learn more about it." LI
