Project Otzma is a program that
gives post-college Jewish adults, ages
20-24, an opportunity to develop
their leadership skills while working
with people of all ages in several
areas throughout Israel. Part of their
time is spent in Nazareth Illit in the
central Galilee region as part of the
Jewish Federation of Metropolitan
Detroit's Partnership 2000 program.
Otzma participants learn Hebrew
and take on varied jobs, such as
tutoring in English, readying apart-
ments for new immigrants and
introducing newcomers to everyday
skills, such as shopping and using
the bank and post office. The young
adults also conduct programs in
which newcomers learn about each
other's culture, as well as the culture
of Israel.
Volunteers may spend several
afternoons a week in hospitals,
senior day care centers or after-

school programs. They will then
have the opportunity to apply their
individual skills and interests to
work for social service agencies.
Upon their return to America,
participants serve the local Jewish
community in a volunteer or profes-
sional capacity.
Otzma is sponsored by
Federation's Michigan/Israel
Connection, which is the communi-
ty's Israel affairs department and a
resource on work, travel and study
in Israel as well as aliya.
The next Detroit-area Otzma
group will leave in August. To
receive acceptance notification by
Dec. 15, the application deadline is
Nov. 15. Candidates submitting
applications by Jan. 15 will be noti-
fied of acceptance by Feb. 15.
