Spokeswoman Sharon Brooks says
donors can expect to have "one small
tube of blood drawn, just two to three
tablespoons — that's the whole process."
Their tissue type then is placed in a
national registry for bone marrow trans-
plantation. A matched donor can expect
a 45 to 90 minute procedure, under
anesthesia, that leaves the site feeling as
if it had been bruised.
As part of a campaign Lori Blum
named "Hugs for Hannah," flyers
have been placed around town to
inform the community of her need
for the transplant.
"It's a very hard decision to make,"
she says. But she and her husband
decided to hope for a cure rather than
offer their daughter a life "where she
could stop growing, go blind or deaf"
Right now, Blum says, the bones have
thickened in Hannah's lower jaw to the
point where "we don't even know if she's
going to get teeth."
Other symptoms of the disease,
also known as Albers-Schonberg
Disease, Generalized Congenital
Osteosclerosis, Ivory Bones, Marble
Bones and Osteosclerosis Fragilis,
also can include fractures, frequent
infections and strokes.
The Blums, who never heard of the
hereditary disease before Hannah
became ill, are considered "healthy carri-
ers" living without the disease but har-
boring it within their own bodies.
"The hard part," says Blum of
Hannah, "is looking at her — at her big
beautiful eyes. On the outside, she looks
like a beautiful, healthy baby girl."
In a plea for potential bone marrow
donors, Scher-Allgren says, "I know it
takes a lot to come do this for someone
you don't know, but if I could save
someone's life by giving up part of one
day, I would make a point to do it every
day" I I

4:30 p.m. Sunday, Nov. 14, at Big
Daddy's Parthenon, 6199 Orchard
