synagogues. They, too, have a rosy
forecast, thanks to Federation funding
for computers and other classroom
upgrades.
College Hillels, meanwhile, are
parlaying renewed vigor into helping
recover the concept of the way Jew-
ish people learn, something nearly
lost in the American experience of
the last century. Last winter's hugely
assembling and providing support of
the AIDS program. There is no
doubt that it "got the word out,"
resulting in an excellent attendance,
ultimately enabling very respectable
contributions toward this continu-
successful adult education program
SAJE (Seminars for Adult Jewish
Enrichment) is returning to the Jew-
ish Community Center. And
chances to learn abound in our
senior adult complexes.
It's the role of Federation's Alliance
for Jewish Education to make sense of
all this excitement — to put it in con-
text, cast a critical eye and chart a
course we all can be proud of.
It shouldn't be lost on FAJE or Fed-
eration leaders that to be daring is to
be innovative, while keeping the best
of what we already have.
That's no small order.
But to do otherwise would be to
fail.
Clearly, FAJE faces a briar parch of
white-hot issues: assimilation, inter-
marriage, pluralism, family values,
patrilineality, apathy, conversion.
The jury is out as FAJE builds a
case. Yet I'm optimistic about the ver-
dict, given the scope and potential of
FAJE's leadership.
