BANK ON SOUTHFIELD'S FUTURE! KEEP aid to Israel without a thought still do so when it is politically costly? Will they remain loyal if other groups — Arab-Americans and Muslims, for example, who are show- ing signs of a growing political sophistication and aggressiveness — outbid the Jews? The United States supports Israel because it's in our interests to do so, and it's right, not because Jews throw more money at Congress than other groups. But that fact is increasingly hard to see in a political system in which raising money overwhelms all other concerns. • The big-money system hurts Jewish groups involved in domestic issues. The groups that oppose most Jewish organizations on pivotal issues such as gun control, abortion and immigration and refugee policy have effectively used the gaping loopholes in current law to great advantage. Need proof? Check out Congress's persistent refusal to cross the National Rifle Association. Jewish groups active on the domestic front can't use campaign finance in the same way. There are too many issues, and too many venues — statehouses and city halls, as well as Capitol Hill. Many Jews care deeply about bet- ter health care, safe banks, consumer protection laws and economic jus- tice. But it's much harder to galva- nize givers around these issues, and to produce consensus positions that can be leveraged into decisions about where to give the community's col- lective money. On health care, for example, Jews are involved as frustrated consumers, but also as doctors and stockholders in big health service corporations. • Good government. It's axiomatic that Jews do best when democratic institutions are strong. The current .big-money system has bred a perva- sive cynicism that has reduced elec- tion-day turnout to abysmal levels and boosted "populists" such as Pat Buchanan and Ross Perot who have little to offer beyond their bitter denunciations of the current system. There is cynicism within the Jewish community, as well: many Jews are turned off by a narrow, sin- gle-interest system in which politi- cians who are hostile to Jewish domestic interests are still rewarded by the pro-Israel groups for their votes on Mideast issues. All of this undercuts the pillars of American democracy. And that, as they say, is not good for the Jews. Li BANK ON BANKS!
